Martha L. Ridgway received her B.A., graduating magna cum laude with departmental honors in history and German from Washburn University in 1978, and received her law degree from the University of Kansas in 1981.

Ms. Ridgway was a co-founder and the first co-chairperson of the CBA Elder Law Committee, and is considered one of the pioneers of elder law in Colorado. She is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education programs on issues affecting the elderly and disabled. Ms. Ridgway has published two articles in The Colorado Lawyer: “Will Preparation for Individuals Lacking Testamentary Capacity” (Aug. 2004) and “Advance Medical Directives and the Authority to Compel Medical Treatment” (March 2000). She also is a contributing author to The Colorado Handbook of Elder Law, published by CLE in Colo., Inc.

In 1992, Ms. Ridgway was selected by the Boulder County Bar Association for its Lawyer for All Seasons Award, given semi-annually to a Boulder bar member, selected by the bar’s Awards Committee, “who has exhibited exceptional dedication to the profession and the community, whose contributions may have gone unnoticed, and who merits special recognition by colleagues in the profession.” In 1997, she received the Boulder County Bar Association’s John Robert Marshall Award for her “commitment and dedication in undertaking volunteer legal service to the elderly and less fortunate of Boulder County.” She also received a special award from Boulder County Legal Services for the most hours ever devoted to a pro bono case.

Ms. Ridgway’s practice is dedicated to focusing on the positive and restorative aspects of the law, and is devoted to assisting the elderly, the disabled, and their families. Her practice includes mediation, arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution, particularly in probate litigation or other contested elder law matters; representing, advising, and consulting with guardians, conservators, personal representatives, agents, and other fiduciaries; serving as an expert witness in probate, elder law, and public benefits; advising and consulting with lawyers in probate and elder law matters; and general elder law. Ms. Ridgway is frequently appointed as guardian ad litem for disabled adults in contested probate or domestic relations cases. She also is a CDR Associates of Boulder-trained mediator.
