The country has changed, the
field has grown and this conference continues to
expand.
Colorado's 3rd Annual Statewide ADR
Conference faculty and attendees represent the
field's ever-broadening spectrum. Judges and volunteers,
international researchers and facilitators, Front-Range and
Western Slope practitioners, and many others will present
today's best practices and most provocative questions for
consideration.
The field
invites us to change, too. This year's presentations challenge
our assumptions about appropriate settings for ADR. Experts
from around the state and country will discuss mediation in
domestic violence cases, criminal court referrals to
restorative justice circles and mediation, internal workplace
conflict resolution processes, personal BATNAs in civil
disputes, multiparty elder cases, and other sometimes
unexpected juxtapositions, and will encourage us to continue
to expand and improve our skills and practices.
Please
enjoy this conference, contribute your own expertise to the
formal and informal conversations, and collaborate with your
remarkable colleagues as we continue to create this dynamic
field of Dispute Resolution
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
JAMIL
MAHUAD, President of Ecuador from August 1998 to
January 2000. He signed an agreement with Peru that, in
President Bill Clinton's words, marked "the end of the
last and longest running source of armed international
conflict in the Western Hemisphere." This event garnered
President Mahuad a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize
(1999). President Mahuad is the Co-founder and Senior Adviser
of the International Negotiation Program at Harvard Law
School. He is a recipient of the World Wildlife Fund Gift to
the Earth Award (1999) for his policies on environmental
protection. He holds a Master in Public Administration from
Harvard University, as well as a JD from the Catholic
University of Ecuador. Based on his experience, President
Mahuad currently researches and teaches negotiation,
leadership, and the challenges facing struggling democracies
and businesses in the age of globalization. His long-term
collaboration with Professors Roger Fisher and Daniel Shapiro
in the theory and practice of successful negotiations is
reflected in his contributed chapter to the book Beyond
Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate, a chapter that
illustrates the practical application of the core concerns
approach to a challenging international
negotiation.
