Legal Aid Foundation Winetasting

Nearly 200 people attended the Legal Aid Foundation’s 9th Annual Wine and Beer Tasting on Thursday, Oct. 17. The event, which was held at the historic 1770 Sherman St. event center, raised several thousand dollars. See page 9 for a list of participants.

2002 Bench Bar Retreat

Attorney General Forum

The DBA and CBA co-sponsored an Attorney General Forum at the Denver Athletic Club on Oct. 3. Ken Salazar (Democrat), Marti Allbright (Republican) and Alison “Sunny” Maynard (Green) were in attendance for the 90-minute question-and-answer forum that was moderated by former Denver Post writer-editor, Fred Brown. The major Denver newspapers covered the breakfast event and more than 50 members of the public were in attendance. Russian Lawyers Get a Taste of the Ol’ U.S. of A

A delegation of Russian attorneys focused on studying the United States legal system were in Denver for a three-week visit from Oct. 17 to November 1.

Partly sponsored by the Colorado Bar Association, the delegation’s visit to Colorado is a project of the Productivity Enhancement Program, which is funded by the U.S. State Department, and the Conducting Business Ethically and Transparently Initiative, which is funded by the Mott Foundation.

The eleven lawyers studied different areas of bar associations, courts, government and law firms and heard from different speakers, including Chuck Turner of the Colorado Bar Association; John Sadwith, Colorado Trial Lawyers; Doris Truhlar, Colorado Womens’ Bar Association; Ray Satter, Denver County Court; Steve Phillips, Denver District Court; Wally Wortham, Denver City Attorney’s Office; Bob Kapelke, Colorado Court of Appeals; Ken Salazar, Attorneys General Office; Mary Mullarkey, Colorado Supreme Court; John Suthers, U.S. Attorneys Office; Bill Ritter; Denver District Attorney’s Office; Dave Mahon, Federal Bureau of Investigation; Charles Garcia, Public Defenders Office; Tom McNamara, Davis Graham & Stubbs; Phil Shuey, solo practitioner; Freddie Alvarez, Kelly Hagland Garnsey & Kahn; John Harrison, Internal Revenue Service; Wiley Daniel, U.S. District Court; Sid Brooks, Bankruptcy Court; DU Law School; Gov. The visitors were home hosted by members of the Parker and Southeast Rotary Clubs. The Russian lawyers from throughout the country represented both private and government interests.

CBA president and DBA member John Moye met with the Russian lawyers for lunch and a discussion about practicing law in the U.S.
