APABA Boat Race

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association Billable Dragons race team, sponsored by Faegre & Benson, successfully competed at the Seventh Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival held July 28 and 29. The Billable Dragons won two of four highly contested races. More than 50 corporate and individual teams competed and an estimated 9,000 attendees enjoyed the food, entertainment and shopping at the festival. APABA is proud of its third year participating in the largest Asian cultural event in Colorado and encourages other bar associations and law firms to field their own dragon boat race team next year. Lawyers, Judges, Journalists ... Oh My!

The Denver and Colorado Bar Associations sponsored a "Court Coverage Forum" with the Colorado Press Association and Colorado Judicial Branch on Aug. 16 at the Denver Press Club. The event was an informal roundtable forum involving journalists, attorneys and judges, designed to discuss issues facing the legal community and state court system. Participants from the legal community included Colorado Supreme Court Justices Gregory Hobbs and Michael Bender; Colorado Court of Appeals Judge John Webb, Denver District Court Judge Christina Habas, Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey; Chief Deputy Denver District Attorney Lamar Sims; and Charles Garcia and Michael Vallejos, former and interim heads of the Denver Office of the Public Defender. Reporters and editors from metro newspapers and TV stations attended. A solid discussion of many issues were covered, including court caseloads and resources, trends in legal issues, accessibility of attorneys and court officers, access to court records, and areas that are under-reported.
