Denver Lawyers' Arts & Literature Contest: Photography Winner Dan Shifrin, "Faceoff"

Dan Shifrin, "Faceoff"

"Faceoff" was taken at a small lake in Jefferson County where Dan Shifrin and his wife walk almost daily. The eagle and its mate have been occasional visitors and have a preference for some dead trees next to the lake. On this particular morning, the eagle sat in a tree watching for breakfast. When the crow landed on a branch several feet away, the eagle ignored it for a while. When the crow remained, the eagle then turned to face it and gave it "the look." The crow moved into the more aggressive, challenging stance captured in the photo. However, after sizing up the situation, it decided to find another tree and flew off.

Shifrin used a Nikon D7000 with a 70-300 mm Tamron lens at 240 mm, set at an aperture of f/9 and a shutter speed of 1/1250 sec. The photo was cropped to provide the desired framing of the two birds and had minimal post-processing. Shifrin enjoys landscape, wildlife, and macro photography. Besides Colorado and Utah, one of his favorite places for photography is Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, northeast of Naples, Fla. Shifrin has a solo intellectual property practice. He also does contract and overflow IP work for other lawyers and firms.
