CBA Family Law Section: Flying Squad

Flying Squads is a subcommittee of the Family Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association.  This is a low-cost/no-cost project to assist pro se domestic litigants and local courts.  Flying Squad organizes, coordinates, and provides volunteer lawyers, mediators, and paralegals to mediate with, negotiate with, educate and assist pro se litigants on planned/designed pro se docket days.

This program works with the assistance and direction of a local judge or court.  A local judge or court sets all of its pro se (un-represented or partially represented) domestic cases on the same day.  That day, a team of volunteer lawyers, mediators and paralegals, the Flying Squad, attends that day's docket and receives referrals from the judge.  The referrals are to mediate some or all issues, help the parties prepare required paperwork (such as financial affidavits and child support guidelines), help the parties understand the legal process and help the parties document their agreements, if any, on state-approved forms.  Volunteers do not provide legal advice, but do provide legal information.  This program is a benefit to courts and pro se parties, as well as an opportunity for lawyers to meet aspirational pro bono goals.  All work is done that day, in the courthouse hallways.
