NOTE
2. Marketing the CBA to Students/Student Liaisons
The AALS committee members expressed concerns about marketing these presentations to the students and determining the best way to encourage student involvement. The attendees from CU and DU noted that students are encouraged to attend if the AALS committee presents networking opportunities with attorneys. The AALS committee will work to encourage its members to attend these presentations. And, Carolyn Gravit will list the areas of practice of each committee members on the AALS member roster to assist in this goal.
It was further suggested that a student liaison from each law school participate to assist the committee implement its involvement at the law schools. This liaison may be the student bar association president or another active student.
3. Bar Bri Scholarships
Charlie Garcia addressed the committee on the historic awarding of Bar Bri scholarships to law students. The committee expressed an interest in continuing these awards. Lorenzo Trujillo will deliver an electronic form of the application to the committee member that will take over this responsibility. It was suggested that the committee approach Steve Davis with Bar Bri to discuss these scholarships. Charlie Garcia worked with Steve Davis in the past to secure Bar Bri's contribution to three-fourths of the scholarship award. The CBA provides one-third of this scholarship. Rebecca Franciscus suggested setting up a separate call to discuss the Bar Bri scholarships. Lorenzo Trujillo suggested awarding these scholarships during the first two weeks of November to include February graduates (taking the July bar exam) in the applicant pool.
4. Mentorship
The AALS committee discussed mentorship possibilities for the committee. It was generally agreed that the committee should make its members available to the many mentor programs already established in the legal community, both inside and outside the law schools. It was determined that creating another mentor program will dilute the resources available to the existing programs.
B. Establish contact with the Board of Law Examiners / Supreme Court
Christine Hayes has contacted the Board of Law Examiners and is working to set up a meeting with Alan Ogden in August to determine how the AALS committee can support its mission to review standards for admission to practice and make recommendations to the Board of Law Examiner and the Supreme Court.
Scott Johns expressed an interest in participating, and it was agreed that members would be notified in advance of the meeting and invited to participate. An email with a link to on-line sign up will be provided shortly.
C. Committee Membership and Participation
The AALS committee will meet on the first Tuesday of every other month at 7:30 a.m. in the Executive Conference Room on the 9th floor of the Colorado Bar Association offices.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 7:30 a.m.
D. Other Goals / Ideas for the Committee
Bob Berry suggested that the committee look at offering services to students to assist with resumes. It was determined that the career services offices at the law schools already provide this service to students; however, the committee members could be available to assist as needed.
The historic role of the committee in advancing professionalism in the profession was discussed. Many committee members would like to see this role continue. October 15, 2008 is "Professionalism Day" and the AALS committee members were encouraged to participate as needed.
The meeting was adjourned.
