Grand opening set for April 29, dockets scheduled for May 4
KIOWA, Colo. – Construction of the new Elbert County Justice Center has been completed and court operations will begin May 4. To mark the occasion, a grand opening celebration has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 at 4:00 p.m.
Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory J. Hobbs, Eighteenth Judicial District Chief Judge William B. Sylvester and other court officers and officials will join the Elbert County Board of Commissioners in a ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opening the new facility.
“We are extremely excited about the opening of the new courthouse in Elbert County,” Chief Judge Sylvester said. “We are confident that all who use this courthouse will agree that this is an efficient and reasonable solution to meet the needs of our citizens.”
The new justice center is 11,600 square feet and provides nearly double the space of the old court building. The new courthouse has two courtrooms, a jury assembly room, a file review room and three public transaction counters. The Department of Probation Services as well as the Office of the District Attorney also will be housed in the new building.
Court operations in Elbert County were relocated to the Douglas County Justice Center in January 2006 when continual water infiltration in the Elbert facility forced its closure.
The old court building is adjacent to the new justice center and is now home to the Elbert County sheriff’s administration and training division.
Elbert County is deemed to be one of the fastest growing counties in the country. Currently, two part-time judges serve the court docket. A visiting magistrate also presides over child support matters. The Elbert County Justice Center is located at 751 Ute Avenue, Kiowa, CO 80117.
