Welcome to the Paralegal Committee Page

"Mission Statement"

The Paralegal Committee is a group of individuals working together for the betterment of the paralegal profession.  The mission of the Paralegal Committee is to support and assist the legal community in providing quality legal services to the community at large and support the continuing education and effective utilization of paralegals. 

In carrying out its mission, the committee is guided by the following goals:

  • Monitor issues relevant to the legal and paralegal professions.
  • Cooperate with other community, legal and paralegal organizations to achieve common goals in providing quality legal services to the community.
  • Develop a plan for long-term growth of the profession and its use by the legal community and community at large.
  • Provide leadership to the profession by maintaining the highest ethical standards.
  • Promote professional recognition of paralegals.

Pro Bono Award to be presented at the Pro Bono Paralegal of the Year Award/Paralegal Day Reception to be held on May 7th 2015.  

The Colorado Bar Association and the Rocky Mountain Paralegal Committee have teamed up again this year to recognize paralegals who offer pro bono work in the community.

Please see the Nomination Form to submit your nomination for a paralegal who has demonstrated his/her commitment to pro-bono work. The recipient of the award will receive $1,000.00 to be given to the recipient's pro bono organization of his/her choice. This reception and the award are being sponsored by The Colorado Bar Association and The Rocky Mountain Paralegal Association along with law firms and other sponsors who will be acknowledged at the reception.  A paralegal may also self-nominate.  Please review the Nomination Criteria for additional information.

The Honorable Judge Gale Miller, Colorado Court of Appeals  will be the guest presenter.  All nominees including past nominees and past award recipients will be introduced and acknowledged for their services.

The reception will include appetizers/light fare, location to be announced.

The Paralegal Committee completed the second revision of the Guidelines for the Utilization of Paralegals which were formally approved at the Spring Meeting of the Colorado Bar Association Board of Governors on May 17, 2008.  Click here for the history of the Guidelines, the Guidelines Formally Approved by the CBA Board of Governors and the Resolution formally adopted by the CBA Board of Governors.

Membership in the Paralegal Committee is open to all individuals who are currently Members, Associate Members or Patrons of the Colorado Bar Association in good standing.

This Committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 pm, except during summer/holiday breaks as noted on the calendar.

  • January 2015 - Holiday Break/No meeting.
  • February 5, 2015 (5:30 - 6:30) -  - Andrea Hamilton, Research Librarian at Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP and Mike Bosick with SMI digital awareness https://www.smiaware.com/.
    • Tips and resources available to research individuals and experts, including the social media aspect:  how to effectively obtain and utilize information from social media sites in your cases. (CLE Pending)
  • March 5, 2015 (5:30) - Dr. Kevin R. Boully Litigation Consultant – Persuasion Strategies/Holland & Hart LLP. Tips on conducting effective witness interviews, communicating with difficult clients and the benefit of creating focus groups to test drive your case at trial (CLE credit pending)
  • April 2, 2015 (5:30 - 6:30) - Shalene Onyango, Program Director at Denver CASA.  Have you thought about volunteering/getting involved in pro bono work for the betterment of our community?   Attend this meeting and learn more about the impact a volunteer can make, learn more about how to be a voice for a child and what it means to be a child advocate for Denver CASA.  Refreshments will be provided. www.denvercasa.org
  • May 7, 2015 - Pro Bono Paralegal of the Year Award Reception and Celebration of Colorado Paralegal Day. Joint event with the Rocky Mountain Paralegal Association. See the section above for nomination and other information regarding this event.   Location to be announced.
  • June 4, 2015 (5:30 - 6:30) -  Sydney Greenish, Sr. Paralegal at Xcel Energy..  Primer on Employment Discrimination Cases (Cases based on sex, race, color, national origin, religion, retaliation, age and genetic information). Walk through the administrative/EEOC process, litigation process and the paralegal’s role from start to finish. (CLE Pending)
  • July - August 2015 - Summer break/no meetings.
