American Humane Fact Sheet about the Link Between Animal Abuse and Family Violence - What is the Link? A correlation between animal abuse, family violence, and other forms of community violence has been established. Child and animal protection professionals have recognized this Link, noting that abuse of both children and animals
is connected in a self-perpetuating cycle of violence. When animals in a home are abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that others in the household may not be safe. In addition, children who witness animal abuse are at a greater risk of becoming abusers themselves.
Colorado Veterinary Medical Association - CVMA exists to enhance animal health and welfare, promote the human/animal bond, protect public health, and foster excellence in veterinary medicine through education, advocacy and outreach.
Community Resources: Colorado and National -
The Link: National Resources - A small number of national organizations are providing information and training on the Link. Many Link programs are being carried out at the local level by local organizations. Many national and local organizations provide information and resources on the Link but do not offer programs. In general, animal-focused organizations (e.g., humane socieities and animal advocacy organizations) seem to be taking the lead on the Link more than human services organizations.
