DENVER — This week nearly 1,500 fifth grade students will learn first-hand from attorneys how the Constitution impacts their lives each day.

From Tuesday to Thursday, attorneys will come ready to teach in classrooms across the metro area, hoping to show students the importance of democracy and their role within it.

“We are prepared and excited to engage the students on how the Constitution matters in their daily lives,” said DBA Director of Public Legal Education Carolyn Gravit.

The fifth annual program is presented by the Denver Bar Association, in collaboration with Liberty Day, a nonprofit organization that will provide materials including pocket Constitutions for teachers and volunteers to use when teaching. Bringing attorneys into the classroom is a major goal for both organizations.

The program leads up to National Constitution Day on Friday, celebrating the 223rd anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. Constitution Day was created by Congress in 2004 to commemorate the date in 1787 that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they created. Constitution Day is the brainchild of Sen. Robert Byrd, who carries a copy of the Constitution in his pocket. The law requires any school and college receiving federal money to teach about the Constitution on or around Sept. 17. For photo and video opportunities or to request a free copy of the Constitution for your child, contact Meghan Bush at 303-824-5303 or mseck@cobar.org.
