CBA BILL OF RIGHTS (soon to be ‘CIVIL RIGHTS’) COMMITTEE

Minutes from March’s meeting approved unanimously

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The letter written by Liz Starrs and the CBA regarding habeas corpus will be published in the Colorado Lawyer as well as in a Women’s Bar Association publication – thank you Patty Jarzobski for making this happen

PUBLIC EDUCATION UPDATE/REPORT

S. Rich contacted Carolyn Gravit, Director of the Public Legal Education Department for the CBA to discuss cooperating on public education programs.

  • discussed opportunities to work with the PLE
    • September – Constitutional Day in which lawyers go into local schools to talk about the Constitution and answer questions
    • New committee currently forming – partnership between the CBA and the Colorado Judicial Institute to educate the public about the judicial system
      • Carolyn will forward the next meeting to time to S. Rich who will most likely attend to find out if the Civil Rights committee can cooperate with this new program
      • S. Chesney mentioned that the program is still in the development stages and is currently directed at specific topics that will be pre-determined, may not be ready for new ideas quite yet

S. Rich also researched student organizations at University of Colorado and University of Denver that may be interested in working with the Civil Rights Committee on public/legal community education:
