*** Denver Courts preparing for DNC
During the DNC, Aug. 23-30, Denver County Court will have lighter dockets to handle convention-related matters. While the courts will be open for emergency issues that arise, such as landlord-tenant or restraining orders, no jury trials or civil cases will be set during the week. Judges and magistrates will work extra hours from 8 a.m. to midnight, Saturday, Aug. 23 to Saturday, Aug. 30, to handle DNC related cases. Judges and staff not in court will train and work on court projects. Check local media, the City of Denver and DNC Web sites for updated downtown security measures and road closures.

*** Denver County Court seeks attorney proposals
The City of Denver needs lawyers to contract to represent defendants in municipal court. The cases are typically criminal petty offenses, which may or may not result in jail time. Interested attorneys basically serve as public defenders. To receive a copy of the request for proposal, contact Cynnthia Moore in the presiding judge’s office, 1437 Bannock St., City and County Building, Room 108, Denver, CO 80202 or call (720) 865-7870. Proposals are due by 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, via U.S. Mail or hand delivery only.

*** Give it your 110 percent! Shop online for school supply donations for homeless children
Online shopping at EZ School Supplies is one easy way to donate to the DBA Community Action Network’s annual School Supply Drive, July 28 - Aug. 6. EZ will donate 10 percent of the cost, so if you donate through this web site, you’ll be giving 110 percent! Cash and school supplies will also be accepted at DBA offices. We hope to fill more than 300 backpacks. To participate in the drive, or for more information, contact hclark@cobar.org.

*** Are You Ready For Some Football?
The DBA Lawyers’ Football League opens its 40th year Sunday, Sept. 7. The league welcomes lawyers and law students. Ten teams will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested players are encouraged to attend the league’s preseason meeting at 5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, at Fossum, Mastro, Barnes & Stazzone, 1720 S. Bellaire St., Suite 807. Contact league commissioner Vic Stazzone at (303) 757-4971 or stazzmann@yahoo.com

*** Be admitted to the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court           The Colorado Chapter of the Federal Bar Association offers a unique opportunity to be sworn in by William K. Suter, Clerk of the United States Supreme Court on Sept. 9, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Brown Palace Hotel. The deadline for Supreme Court admission applications (and RSVP) is Aug. 15. Two CLE credits have been requested. For information and registration, click here.

*** Davis Award Nominations Sought
Nominations are due Sept. 1 for the 2008 Richard Marden Davis Award, which honors Denver attorneys under the age of 40 who have demonstrated excellence as a lawyer and leadership in Denver’s civic, educational and charitable activities. The award was established by Davis Graham & Stubbs, the family of Dick Davis, and the Denver Bar Foundation in 1992 to recognize successful and community-minded young attorneys in private and public practice, and to inspire new members of the Denver legal community. For a nomination form or information, contact Nancy Meyer at Davis Graham & Stubbs at (303) 892-7584 or nancy.meyer@dgslaw.com.
