2008 LAW DAY EVENTS IN COLORADO

ADAMS/BROOMFIELD BAR ASSOCIATION
The Adams/Broomfield Bar Association is having its Annual Law Day Breakfast on Friday, May 2nd, at 7:15 am.  The event will be held at the Broomfield Events Center located at 11450 Broomfield Lane in Broomfield. This year's theme is: The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity.  Guest speakers will be: Colorado Court of Appeals Judge Steve Bernard and U. S. District Court Judge Marcia Krieger, whose presentations will be part of Our Courts, a joint activity of the Colorado Judicial Institute and Colorado Bar Association that provides non-partisan information to further public knowledge and understanding of the state and federal courts in Colorado. Congressman Ed Perlmutter will also be speaking as ABBA’s “special invited guest.”

ABBA plans to enhance their Annual Breakfast by creating centerpieces out of school supplies (rulers, etc.) and anticipates decorating about 60 tables. Afterward, they will donate the centerpieces to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Adams and Broomfield Counties, a program that advocates for abused and neglected children thoughout Colorado.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION
The Arapahoe County Bar Association is having a free informative program for parents and teens called What Every Parent and Teen Should Know.  This program is part of a continuing serious of free legal educational opportunities for the public provided by the People's Law School. The sessions are presented by the Arapahoe Community College in conjunction with the Arapahoe County Bar Association. Presenters include Denver Juvenile District Court Judge Dana Wakefield, Chief Deputy District Attorney Pamela Wakefield, and Arapahoe County Court Magistrate Bonnie McLean.  The panel will present the structure, functions, and goals of the juvenile system.

In addition, ACBA will be celebrating Law Day by bringing attorneys to the local high schools. Bar members will be teaching government and speech and debate classes at Regis and Cherry Creek High Schools to promote Law Day. They will be speaking to students about this year’s theme “Rule of Law” and specifically, how the law affects their lives as young adults. Specific topics will include drug and alcohol possession, search and seizure issues, landlord tenant law, and driving offenses.

AURORA BAR ASSOCIATION
The Aurora Bar Association is having The Law of Living in a Neighborhood Law Day celebration on May 1st, 6:00pm. The location is the City Café, Aurora Municipal Court Building, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway. The public is welcome to join the event and learn about the rules and rights that come with being a neighbor. Property issues, home owner associations, and many other issues that affect home owners will be presented. This will be a great opportunity for the community to ask questions and to become more informed about their rights. Speakers will include: Todd Fackler, CEO of MSI, Anthony J. Rechlitz II, HOA Attorney, and Chris Lynch, Lennar Communities.

COLORADO BAR ASSOCIATION
The Colorado Bar Association in connection with the Colorado Judicial Institute is providing Our Courts nonpartisan information programs to audiences around the state to further public knowledge and understanding of the state and federal courts in Colorado. Our Courts presentations address the role of fair and impartial courts in applying and preserving the rule of law. Click here for more information.

Senior Law Day
An annual educational seminar with programs specifically for seniors in the Denver community, and to learn about important issues facing our growing senior citizen population. Participants will receive a FREE copy of the new Colorado Senior Law Handbook, a publication of the Colorado Bar Association.

CONTINENTAL DIVIDE BAR ASSOCIATION
The Continental Divide Bar Association sent an editorial letter to their local newspapers, Vail Daily, Summit Daily and Aspen Daily, and acknowledged the relevence of Law Day in their community.

DELTA BAR ASSOCIATION
Delta Bar Association's Law Day event is combined with Seventh JD (see Seventh JD/Delta below).

DENVER BAR ASSOCIATION

DOUGLAS/ELBERT COUNTIES BAR ASSOCIATIONS
The Douglas/Elbert Counties Bar Associations will be having a Law Day Luncheon on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at 12 pm. Attorney General John Suthers will be discussing The Rule of Law. The location is the Douglas County Justice Center, Jury Assembly Room.

EL PASO COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION
The El Paso County Bar Association will be sponsoring the following events:

  • Senior Law Day - A public information event for Seniors on Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Colorado Springs Senior Center, 1514 N. Hancock.

HEART OF THE ROCKIES BAR ASSOCIATION
The Heart of the Rockies Bar Association sent an editorial letter to their local newspaper, Mountain Mail, and acknowledged the relevence of Law Day in their community.

LARIMER COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION
The Larimer County Bar Association will be having a Law Day Luncheon on Friday, April 25, 2008. Governor Ritter will be the guest speaker. In addition, local high school students will be receiving scholarship awards from the Larimer County Bar Association, as well as local mock trial teams. 

SEVENTH JD AND DELTA BAR ASSOCIATIONS
The 7th Judicial District and Delta Bar Associations will be having a meet and greet with the Colorado Supreme Court Justices on April 30, 2008, 6:00 p.m. at the Bill Heddles Recreation Center, Delta, Colorado.

THIRTEENTH JD
The Thirteenth did a few things locally for Law Day. First, a letter was sent to the editor of the "county seat" newspapers covering the 13th JD.  Fort Morgan Times and the Brush News Tribune ran it, and sent 13th JD a few welcome compliments.
 
Also, East Morgan County Library was asked to participate. Hence, the librarian assembled a special display describing the celebration, and featured several books on the legal system and the rule of law.
 
Lastly, the ABA's lesson plan regarding mediation and the adversarial system was presented to 4th and 5th graders at Beaver Valley Elementary in Brush. As a result, another teacher called to ask if 13th JD would do the same for more classes later in the month. Other attorneys were also contacted to present to the middle school and high school in Brush.

WELD COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION
The Weld County Bar Association sent an editorial letter to their local newspaper, Greeley Tribune, and acknowledged the relevence of Law Day in their community.
