LARIMER COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
Tuesday, February 14, 2006
Bluebird Café

ATTENDING: Jeanne Drake; Daniel Muffly; Josh Zugish; David Johnson; Randy Starr; Cathy Vlasak

CALL TO ORDER: Ms. Drake called the meeting to order at 7:05 a.m.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Mr. Johnson provided copies of bank account balances as of February 13, 2006, and Compiled Financial Statements by CW Decker & Co. Spending is in line with budget. He reported that he has implemented changes to the Legal Aid account to avoid check charges and has added an interest component to the Association’s primary checking account.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS: Mr. Starr reported regarding a suggestion he intends to make regarding the establishment of a political issue advocacy wing for the State Bar, so that members may allocate funds for political issues outside of customary dues.

YOUNG LAWYERS: Mr. Zugish reported that the school district has placed entry conditions on what has traditionally been an essay contest for Law Day, to the point where LCBA feels the contest will be difficult to judge. He will withdraw from the school district on this year’s contest, but may take it up again next year.

PROFESSIONALISM COMMITTEE: Ms. Drake and Mr. McCargar informed us that a selection has been made for the Professionalism Award, and that it will be presented during the Spring Term Day luncheon. Ms. Vlasak will invite the membership to attend the luncheon and will mention the award ceremony as yet another reason to attend.

PRO BONO PROGRAM: As Ms. Rice was not present, no report. Mr. Starr expressed concerns regarding some mandatory pro bono ideas being considered by the Chief Justice.

LIBRARY: Mr. McCargar reported that the Library Committee will be undertaking a substantial relocation of portions of the collection on February 18, 2006. The relocation adheres to the "library by design" concept.

HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL: Mr. McCargar reported that the regional competition went very smoothly, thanks to the combined efforts of the Larimer-Weld coordinating committee headed by Linda Connors (Larimer County) and Kim Banner (Weld County). The incredibly well-coached team from Fort Collins High School took the title, and will compete at the state competition on March 3 & 4, 2006, in Denver. The regional competition in 2007 is planned for the Larimer County Justice Center.

SPRING TERM DAY: Ms. Drake reported that, due to judicial commitments, the morning coffee hour will commence at 8:30 (instead of 8:00) a.m. on March 7, 2006. Ms. Vlasak will so publish in the Messenger. The luncheon and bowling event are confirmed. Ms. Drake is trying to line up Mr. Clark for some brief remarks and the introduction of new lawyers.

CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS: Although Ms. Lonowski was absent, the Committee confirmed a number of programs have been scheduled. There was a discussion regarding whether a fee should be charged to non-lawyer attendees for the First Amendment seminar. Mr. Muffly will look into this and report back.

OTHER BUSINESS: Ms. Drake inquired if the membership wanted to support the cost of a University of Colorado Alumni event. The Committee declined.

WHEREUPON, the meeting adjourned at 7:50 a.m.
