MIYB and Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs, Colorado : Profile of a Community

When the Colorado Bar Association invited representatives from around the state to participate in the Domestic Violence – Make It Your Business project (DV:MIYB), Diane Moore of Steamboat Springs eagerly joined in and has quickly made a difference in her community.  As a role model community for the project, the Colorado Bar would like to recognize the achievements of Steamboat Springs.

Diane Moore, the Executive Director of Advocates Against Battering and Abuse, saw a need in her community and was excited about the idea of a statewide project with the support of the Colorado Bar Association. She had worked on the issue of the impact of domestic violence on the workplace in the past and realized how important it is for employers to recognize their role. She was aware of the problem in her area and employers had previously called her for advice. But she did not have the support and resources available to create a program around the issue.

With the support of the Colorado Bar Association’s statewide project, Diane has been able to offer numerous opportunities for the business community to learn how to recognize domestic violence, how to respond to it, and how to refer victims or perpetrators to community resources.

The Colorado Bar Association applauds Diane Moore and employers in Steamboat Springs for creating a community-wide effort in addressing the impact of domestic violence on the workplace.

Diane has seen changes occurring as more and more of the businesses in the close-knit community are participating in the DV:MIYB trainings.

  • The word has spread throughout the area about the project and the trainings.
  • She continues to look for additional employers to reach out to and has expressed an interest in training within the school district, which is one of the larger employers in the county.
