This newsletter is a periodic publication to keep our members informed about what programs
and assistance the ETF is providing to the CBA membership.
A Message from CBA President David Johnson
Dear CBA Members:
In its continuing effort to assist Colorado lawyers as they deal with the effects of the current recession, the Economic Task Force (ETF) of the CBA has been hard at work developing and expanding a number of programs for our members. These programs include such benefits as practical CLE programs targeted at helping lawyers in tough economic times, CLE tuition assistance, career development advice, marketing assistance, dues assistance and networking opportunities. Please take a moment to read this Newsletter and learn more about all the great work that the CBA and the ETF has been doing. Hopefully you will find something that will benefit you and your practice.

What's New
Career Assistance
Engergize Your Job Search! An Intensive Full Day Program on Nov. 14
Finding a job in the current market requires hard work, creativity and tenacity. This program will help you tap into the strengths and tools you need to land your next job. The day starts by helping you realistically evaluate your own inherent strengths and interests, and walks you through every important step on the way to your interview including the interview itself. Sign up in advance for a mock interview and a personalized, face-to-face evaluation. The program is at the CBA CLE offices on 1900 Grant St., 3rd floor from 9 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. Register now for either the LIVE or WEBCAST program. Tuition is $25, including lunch and snacks.
Free Job Search and Career Transition Support Groups
Attend one or all of the brown-bag group sessions from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 10, Dec. 8, Jan. 12, Feb. 9, Mar. 9, April 13, May 11 and June 8. Participate in a safe, confidential forum where you can share your experiences, network and gather practical information to enhance your job search or career transition efforts. Getting Your Student Loans Forgiven: How government and nonprofit employees can earn public service loan forgiveness
A must attend for anyone with high student debt working for the government or a nonprofit, this free webinar explains how you can benefit from the College Cost Reduction and Access Act, the most significant law affecting public service in a generation. In this challenging job search climate, candidates who follow the rules of good etiquette can give themselves an advantage. Learn about the rules of etiquette as they apply to layoffs, networking, job searching, and interviewing.
CLE Programming
Young Lawyer Conference 2009: I'm a Lawyer... Now What? on Nov. 18
Law school prepares you to think like a lawyer, but it doesn't always prepare you to actually be a lawyer. Learn how to navigate your new role as an associate, tackle your first trial or file your first brief at this full-day program, Wednesday, Nov. 18, 9:30 a.m., at 1900 Grant St., third floor. Cost is $95 for CBA Young Lawyer Division members, $179 for CBA members and $279 for nonmembers. Six general CLE credits, including one ethics. ETF tuition assistance may be available. Register now for either the live or webcast program.
CBA Economic Task Force Movie Night on Nov. 18
The CBA ETF will sponsor a CLE Movie Night on Wednesday, Nov. 18, following the Young Lawyer Conference at the CBA CLE offices on 1900 Grant Street, 3rd Floor. Pizza, beverages and CLE (ethics credit applied for). Program starts at 6 p.m. with the CLE presentation titled "Coping with the Rambo Lawyer" and movie showing of "Class Action." RSVP to (303) 860-1115, x727 or e-mail lunches@cobar.org. This program is free for members who are attending the Young Lawyer Conference, $5 for CBA members and $20 for non-CBA members. Please be sure to mention that the RSVP is for the ETF movie night.
Lawyer Retooling Homestudies
For a limited time, CBA members can access some of CLE's best introductory programs online for only $95. Please limit 1 per person. Eligible programs are listed here and are only available in the online video format displayed.
Networking Events
Colorado Springs Document Shredding Party on Nov. 7
The ETF is planning a series of shredding parties across the state. Cintas is providing shredding services for these events free of charge for up to 10 boxes per person. You are asked to bring a nonperishable food item or $2 donation per box. For information on what files can be shredded, click here. The second date is set for Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Colorado Springs at the parking lot across the street from Southside Johnny's on the west side. Please RSVP by e-mailing lunches@cobar.org or calling (303) 860-1115, ext. 727. Free appetizers and one beverage will be provided to all who attend at Southside Johnny's. Please be sure to take all documents out of three ring binders. This event is sponsored by the CBA ETF and the El Paso County Bar Association.

CLE Programming in the Planning Stages
The ETF is considering the following programs:
Setting Up a Home Office – One of the best ways to economize when you’re starting out is to work out of your home. We will cover everything you need to know to be successful. Technology considerations – tax implications – collaborating with clients and counsel – tips for success – meeting with clients – working with a virtual assistant – legal research - and much more.
Student Debt Relief – Everything you need to know to qualify for debt relief. We will cover the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. Included will be comprehensive information about Public Service Loan Forgiveness including which jobs qualify, which loans are covered and how to earn forgiveness. Tools will include calculators, downloadable worksheets, podcasts and an interactive forum. The requirements are complicated and must be followed exactly. Here’s your chance to learn about options and to ask questions.
Networking and Job Search Assistance
Look for more Shredding Parties and Movie Nights to come! The ETF is considering organizign a Billiards Party in the near future as well.
Summary of CBA Benefits and Economic Assistance
Confidential Assistance for Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Economic Issues
There are two programs that offer assistance to attorneys. Both the Colorado Attorney Assistance Program and the Colorado Lawyers Helping Lawyers Peer Assistance Program are confidential and as such are exempt from reporting to the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel. Financial assistance for attorneys may be available through the Waterman Fund.
Dues Assistance Program
Any prospective or current member of the CBA, who is unemployed or facing other financial hardships, may apply for a partial or full dues waiver for general CBA dues. For more information, please e-mail amberv@cobar.org.
Tuition Assistance Provided for CLE in Colorado Programs
CLE in Colorado offers tuition assistance for members who are unemployed or are facing other financial hardships. For more information, please e-mail Gary Abrams.
$25 CLE coupons for all those who pass the July 2009 Bar Exam
The ETF will once again be giving out coupons at the Fall Swearing In on October 26. For more information please e-mail Heather Clark.
Benefit of the Week: Improved CBA Find-A-Lawyer Directory Listings and Search Options
Now you can customize your CBA Find-A-Lawyer Directory listing with new options, such as upload your resume or curriculum vitae to your profile and select it to be searchable by employers and potential new clients; update your employment status with a variety of options; and add your biography, list advanced degrees and certifications and multiple counties where you practice; also list your various local bars and CBA section/committee memberships.
