Continuing Education
Being Prepared: How Lawyers Can Lay the Groundwork for Their Own Financial Future, Thursday, Oct. 6
The last decade of economic turmoil has forced attorneys and their clients to rethink retirement in an environment of volatile returns, low interest rates, and future inflation concerns. At midlife, the focus must be: “How do I build Lifelong Income Stream,” yet most individuals and their financial planners have not set this planning process in motion. Spend a morning with us on Oct. 6 at the "Being Prepared: How Lawyers Can Lay the Groundwork for their Own Financial Future" CLE and learn some of the critical decisions needing to be made. Regardless of your retirement plans and timelines, it is never too early to explore key principles that will allow you to enjoy the retirement you want by structuring your savings to minimize taxes and risk, get the most from Social Security, and protect yourself along the way. Pat Funk will lead the program from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Cost to attend is $45 for members, $60 for non-members, and includes a copy of the speaker's book, "Lawyers at Midlife," and continental breakfast. No sales pitches, just straight information and three general CLE credits. You may attend in person or via webcast. To RSVP, e-mail lunches@cobar.org, or call 303-860-1115, ext. 272.

A panel of judges also will share their expertise on evidentiary issues unique to family law cases, including the ever-challenging child hearsay question. Register now.
The Duty to Preserve Records: The Pension Committee Decision, Tuesday, Oct. 18
Over the last decade, courts have refined the obligations of parties to preserve and collect paper and electronic documents. The rapid changes in technology and the expansion of new media where information is stored has made these obligations important in civil litigation. Speaker Caleb Durling, of Reilly Pozner, will examine the Pension Committee v. Banc of America Securities decision, in which Judge Shire Scheindlin, of the Southern District of New York, set out significant new law concerning discovery obligations, focusing on those who are negligent or grossly negligent in failing to preserve electronic and paper documents. Find out more information.
