Funding Cuts for Legal Aid

If you care about access to justice and the integrity of our legal system, you may want to contact your elected representatives in Washington and let them know. In the ongoing budget wars, one of the programs on the chopping block is the federal Legal Services Corporation, which currently provides approximately 40 percent of the annual operating budget for Colorado Legal Services, our statewide legal aid program. If a House-passed GOP spending bill becomes law, it would mean a loss of $765,000 for Colorado Legal Services over the remainder of this calendar year. Any cut in federal funding will come on the heels of another loss of approximately $500,000 due to reductions in COLTAF funding (because of continued very low interest rates) and a reduction in state funding for legal services for victims of domestic violence, and will further compromise the program’s ability to provide essential legal assistance to low-income Coloradans. Conflict of Laws: A Survey of 2010 – A One-Hour Legal Connection Program with Professor Ved Nanda, March 22

Join distinguished faculty Ved Nanda for a discussion of developments from 2010, including a Supreme Court interpretation of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of Child Abduction and Colorado Supreme Court recent case law regarding the revival of foreign judgments.

Find out more about this program.

How do we get our Organizational Nutrition?

Organizations grow through a developmental life cycle process similar to human beings— or at least we can see the similarities. Therefore, we can consider organizations also to be organisms. They have a life process. If this is the case, then how do we properly feed and nourish the organization to foster health? Read more

Tip of the Week from Reba Nance
Creating Electronic Sticky Notes on Your Computer
We’ve all had them— post-it notes stuck to our computer monitor to help us remember something. Unfortunately, post it notes fall off and get lost. Windows 7 has a feature that lets you create sticky notes that won’t fall off. You can use Sticky Notes to write a to-do list, jot down a phone number, or do anything else you’d use a pad of paper for. Click here for an explanation of how it works. Click on “Show All” and you will see how to create, delete and change the colors of sticky notes.

Feel free to contact Reba Nance with questions.

App of the Week and
Blog of the Week from Alli Gerkman

Blog of the week: My Shingle
Carolyn Elefant was blogging at My Shingle before many lawyers knew what blogging was. Since 2002, she has been an online resource and advocate for solo lawyers. She keeps things interesting by covering a variety of topics that impact solos, including legal process outsourcing, ethics, and entrepreneurship—and she doesn’t pull punches.

App of the Week: Skype, Free
If you’re not already familiar with Skype, you should check it out. You don’t need a smartphone to make use of its many phone and video phone services but if you do have an iPhone with a front-facing camera, Skype gets even better because you can actually take your video calls anywhere you can tap into a 3G or Wi-Fi network.

If you have any questions contact Alli Gerkman at agerkman@cobar.org.
