Watch the future of the legal profession try their hand in court

BRIGHTON, CO — February 26, 2007 — Teens from as far as Durango, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs will come together this weekend to try a civil case involving an accident where a pickup truck and train collided at a crossing in rural Adams County, killing the 17-year-old driver of the truck. High school students from across the state have been preparing since September for the 2007 Colorado Bar Association High School Mock Trial Tournament. Teams made it past the regional tournaments and will participate in the state finals on March 3–4.

Colorado Supreme Court Justice Alex Martinez will preside over the championship round. Scoring the championship round will be Adams/Broomfield Chief Judge Harlan Bockman, Adams/Broomfield County Judge Michael Cox, Industrial Claim Appeals Judge David Cain, Adams/Broomfield County Bar Association President Sharon Holbrook, Denver Bar Association President Paul Chan and Colorado Hispanic Bar Association President Awilda Marquez.

The tournament will take place at Adams County Justice Center, 1100 Judicial Center Dr. in Brighton. The first round begins Friday at 1 p.m.; second round at 4:15 p.m. Rounds will continue on Saturday with trials at 9 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., with the championship round at 5:30 p.m.

This is the 22nd year of Mock Trials sponsored by the Colorado Bar Association. Each year the process helps students develop critical thinking, speaking, reasoning, strategic planning and team collaborative skills.

One team from Colorado will go on to compete in the national championship in Dallas, Texas, May 11–14, where 44 teams from the United States, Northern Marianna Islands, Guam and Korea will compete.

The press is encouraged to cover this inspiring event and also to bring cameras in the courtroom. To view a full list of teams, visit
