Bar Association Award of Merit to Ed Kahn

DENVER — The Colorado Bar Association will award Edwin S. Kahn with its highest award, the Award of Merit, at the Colorado Bar Foundation annual Bar Fellows dinner on Friday, Jan. 11.

Ed Kahn has had a legal career committed to helping worthwhile causes. He currently is a partner at Kelly Garnsey Hubbell + Lass, LLC, but also is special counsel for the Colorado Center on Law and Policy, where he has served as president of its Board of Directors.

"Serving the public where and when one can is part of a lawyer’s professional responsibility, and I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve in many meaningful matters,” said Ed Kahn. “I am pleased and humbled to receive this award."

Ben Aisenberg, who nominated Kahn, said: “Ed’s pro bono work on behalf of the Bar and the people of the State of Colorado has been truly impressive. His service as a pro bono lawyer for the Colorado Center on Law and Policy, his association with the Legal Aid Society, his work on behalf of the Colorado Lawyer’s Committee — to name a few — makes him a model in our profession. His selflessness is an inspiration to all of us.”

Kahn has fought for Coloradans throughout his 40 years as a trial attorney. He was appointed by the Colorado Supreme Court to investigate possible mismanagement by the State Public Defender; and also was appointed as Special Counsel to prosecute the Boulder Daily Camera and two reporters for improper contacts with jurors in a death penalty criminal case. He represented the Colorado State Legislature in an action that secured confidentiality of grand jury reports. Recently, Kahn was successful in helping obtain $155 million for public health needs when Colorado Blue Cross and other health insurers converted to for-profit status.

He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers; a member of the Colorado, Denver and American Bar Associations; served as director and president of COLTAF, the Colorado Lawyers Trust Account Foundation; and he serves on a variety of professional and community organizations.
The CBA Award of Merit is awarded annually to a member of the association for outstanding service to the association, the legal profession, the administration of justice, and to the community.
