He was a member of the Colorado Bar Association Board of Governors and Executive Council; was a member of the American Bar Association House of Delegates; and he chaired the University of Colorado Law Alumni Board, was on the Board of Editors of the CU Law Review and was Order of the Coif. He was awarded CU Law’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005. He is a past president of the Denver Bar Association, and in 2001, the DBA awarded him with its Award of Merit. Kapelke was president of Law Club, receiving its Lifetime Achievement Award, and was president of the William Doyle Inn of Court. He served as the president of the Denver Rotary Club, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Judicial Institute, as president of the University Club, and as past-chair of the George W. Clayton College for Boys. Kapelke also is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers.

The CBA Award of Merit is awarded annually to a member of the association for outstanding service to the association, the legal profession, the administration of justice, and to the community.
