Foster Children Find Reason to Celebrate
It is said that the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year. Bills are coming in from the holidays, the family has left town and the vacation is over. However, some families, especially children, don’t have the luxury of experiencing such happiness.
To help comfort some of the community’s overlooked children, the Denver Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division will host “Winter Festival” for more than 300 Denver-area foster children on Saturday, Jan. 26, 10:30 a.m.–1 p.m. These children, from infants to age 12, will receive free toys, sporting goods, books and a pizza party. A balloon artist will provide entertainment for the children and their foster parents.
“This event will be the most rewarding experience,” said Olivia “Libby” DeBlassio, event chair of the Denver Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division Winter Festival. “The 300 children that will attend didn’t get Christmas gifts this year, so it will be great to finally see them smile.”
Young Lawyer volunteers will turn space donated by the Denver Department of Human Services, 1200 Federal Blvd., Denver, into a festive holiday toy and clothing store. Foster children will “buy” items with coupons provided by the young lawyers.
For many of these foster children, this event is an opportunity for them to see their brothers and sisters, who may have been moved into different homes for foster care.
This team effort is celebrating its 12th year. Young lawyers have joined with local businesses that donated toys; law firms that contributed money and collected gifts; and individuals from the public who gave their time and resources. More than 300 lawyers participate directly or indirectly with the event.
“It makes me so happy to see the legal community come out in full-force to help such a great cause,” said YLD Chair Casie Collignon. “It shows the dedication legal professionals have to their community.”
