The Balancing Act: COLAP’s Tip for Work and Life

Mindful May

Throughout May, we have practiced staying present and focused on what we are doing, mindfully paying attention to the world around us, and taking deep breaths to slow down our thoughts. For the final Mindful May tip, we turn to the saying “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Lawyers are bombarded with tasks that are destination-oriented. Our to-do lists include projects that take weeks, months, or years to complete, but have definite start and end points. However, life is what happens along the way, not just at the beginning or at the end. Mindfulness techniques, such as breathing, expanding our focus, and letting the work day go, help us understand that “now is the most interesting time of all” so that we can enjoy the journey rather than letting it pass us by.
