Barristers After Hours—Thursday, Jan. 17

The DBA YLD invites you to attend Barristers After Hours, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Katie Mullen’s. Free drinks and appetizers will be provided. No need to RSVP, contact Joel Jacobson for more information.

International Service of Process Under the Hague Convention and Colorado Law—Thursday, Jan. 24

This CLE addresses serving a defendant located outside the U.S. pursuant to the Hague Service Convention. It will examine the purpose, history, and applicability of the Hague Service Convention, as well as the available methods of service under the Convention. It will also consider available substituted service methods and include a discussion of the Colorado Supreme Court’s sole opinion on this topic, Willhite v. Rodriguez-Cera. Presented by Grant Sullivan, Assistant Solicitor General, and Cash K. Parker, Attorney at Hall and Evans LLC. One general CLE credit is available. RSVP online or email lunches@cobar.org.

Resources Available to Attorneys through COLAP—Thursday, Feb. 28

This presentation will explain the Colorado Lawyer Assistance Program and what it has to offer our judges, lawyers and law students. Information will be presented about substance abuse and mental health issues, including the impact on a national level, the State of Colorado and in the legal profession. Will then discuss identifying early signs and symptoms of substance abuse and mental health issues in order to seek help sooner rather than later. Will discuss how and where to seek help for the judge, lawyer or law student dealing with whatever is impacting their ability to be a productive member of the legal community. RSVP online or email lunches@cobar.org.

Miscellaneous
DBA YLD Members—Get Involved with Legal Nights
Denver Legal Night is an open house where volunteer attorneys provide free legal and referral information to people who cannot afford legal services. Areas of law addressed commonly include:
  • Immigration
  • Family
  • Criminal
  • Housing
  • Consumer and bankruptcy
  • Employment
Denver Legal Night is a terrific opportunity to assist those in need while also broadening your own knowledge by working with experienced and committed lawyers. Since 2006, more than 400 volunteer attorneys have helped more than 12,000 people in the Denver-metro area. We cannot be successful without volunteers like you!

Denver Legal Night is co-sponsored by the Colorado Lawyers Committee, Denver Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, and the Denver Access to Justice Committee.
ABA Update
News and Announcements from the ABA
  • Register to attend the Midyear Meeting in Dallas, Texas in February. The ABA YLD, like all entities, will be headquartered in the Hilton Anatole. (Please note that ABA YLD events will be held Feb. 7 - 9 and an announcement will be made when social event ticket information becomes available.) A recent addition to the meeting programming is a special New Partner Workshop on Feb. 8. The Workshop, featuring nationally-known law firm marketing expert Stephen Fairley, provides a full day of interactive learning and networking opportunities to help new partners, aspiring partners, and attorneys who have launched their own firms prepare for their new role and future success.
  • Take an active role in issues that directly affect young lawyers by submitting and drafting a resolution via the YLD's new online Resolution Proposal Form. If you are not sure what a resolution looks like or what resolutions have been debated at previous meetings of the YLD Assembly, the proposal form has links to drafting procedures and past Assembly agendas. The Resolutions Team accepts resolution proposals on a rolling basis, so please submit your proposal soon!
  • Volunteer to debate a resolution at Assembly. We are always looking for interested young lawyers to speak on issues of importance to the profession. Please contact Assembly Speaker Jennifer Daugherty if you are interested.
