Project Safeguard
Project Safeguard is a Colorado community based agency incorporated as a non-profit in 1984 that is dedicated to ending abuse experienced by women in intimate relationships. Our approach to eradication of domestic violence is through the legal system. Specially trained legal advocates assist women and their children when seeking protection from violence and stalking through the courts. We also attack domestic violence through collaborations with other community and system-based agencies. Together we develop recommendations designed to ensure a proactive approach to domestic violence, improved response to victims and adequate resources for those victims as well as accountability of perpetrators.
We have several pro bono opportunities, which are primarily suited for those attorneys with family law experience. The area of greatest need is for pro bono representation of domestic violence victims seeking permanent civil protection orders and dissolution of marriage or allocation of parental responsibilities. Guidelines determining what types of cases and how many will be established with each attorney on an individual basis. Referrals of cases determined to be appropriate as assessed by various factors would then be made directly to volunteer attorneys by Project Safeguard Legal Advocates.
Additionally, there are after-hours opportunities through our Legal Advocacy and Assistance Clinics. Project Safeguard’s Legal Advocacy and Assistance Clinics provide a chance for attorneys to assist abused women who are preparing to petition the courts for dissolution of marriage (with or without children) or allocation of parental responsibilities without benefit of an attorney. A legal advocate and an attorney facilitate this pro se clinic and provide a step-by-step explanation of the forms as well as help prepare them for court appearances. Clients also receive assistance with questions pertaining to legal procedures and those specific to their case. Project Safeguard provides all the appropriate forms and there is no charge to clients.
