El Centro seeks volunteer attorneys for the wage claim program, Denver’s first day laborer organization that protects the rights of vulnerable day laborer populations through an employment program, a legal program and other educational programs:

El Centro’s legal program (Wage claim assistance program) assists workers in recovering unpaid wages through collective education and representation of workers. Currently, El Centro’s legal program is run in collaboration with the University of Denver, college of Law, on a weekly basis. Over the past three years, El Centro’s legal clinic helped recover over $30,000 in unpaid wages to workers, educating workers about their rights, and working to change policy in the Denver area to enhance the rights of low wage workers.
The vision of El Centro’s wage claim program is to use the legal program to empower and to organize workers in the community.
The responsibilities of volunteer lawyers are:
- Provide supervision and advice to law students on a weekly basis;
- Work on cases and refer cases to appropriate parties, if necessary;
- Work closely with El Centro's staff to develop the infrastructure of the wage claim program;
- Provide research and advice to El Centro's policy work, which seeks to improve the life of low wage workers.
The qualifications of the volunteer lawyers are:
- Spanish speaking lawyer is preferred (workers bringing wage claim issues are mostly Spanish-speaking workers);
- Employment and labor lawyers;
- Understand and support the vision of El Centro's legal program: to use its legal program to empower and organize workers in the community;
- Available at least once a week, for two hours at El Centro.
