Internet Tip: Two Free Programs to Shorten Long URLs

Are you tired of sending a long URL to a friend or colleague, only to have it break when sent causing the recipient to have to cut and paste it back together? Or even worse, they click on the link but only the first line of the URL is entered in the address bar, causing them to think the link doesn't work? There are two great sites that will help you with this.

First is TinyURL.com. This free site allows you to enter a long URL in the text box, and it will create a much shorter URL that will not break in email postings—and never expires! In the example below, TinyURL converted a URL of 149 characters to one of 25 characters. Check it out and see for yourself!

Original URL—www.amazon.com/Barbecue-Bible-Sauces-Marinades-Butters/dp/0761119795/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/002-5380079-1735245?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180018893&sr=8-3

Tiny URL— tinyurl.com/2exz4s

The second site is bitly.com. Bitly is similar to TinyURL, but you can set up a free account and customize your links. For example: bit.ly/CBArenew.
