LARIMER COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION
MINUTES FROM THE NOVEMBER 9, 2004 MEETING
AT CAFÉ BLUEBIRD AT 7:05 A.M.
ATTENDING: Ian McCargar, Mason Mitchell, Linda Miller, Dan Muffly, Randy Starr, Cathy Vlasak,, Jennifer Rice, Julie Stencel and David Johnson.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: October 12, 2004 minutes were approved.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Dan Muffly provided the report. CW Becker was provided the new budget with the modified budget categories. Dan recently received the July financial reports from CW Becker.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS: Randy Starr provided the report. The Board is to review the current process the Colorado Bar Association President is selected. The LCBA Executive Committee recommended to Randy that the present system is preferred. The Board was also asked to review proposed changes to Colorado Appellate Rule 3.4.
YOUNG LAWYERS: Julie Stencel provided the report. The young lawyers did not have a meeting in October. The young lawyers want to include an article in the next Messenger publication.
PROFESSIONALISM COMMITTEE: The committee is meeting again. John Jostad entertained the committee members at the last meeting with his tales from the bench. Eric Sunness is presiding over this committee.
WOMEN’S BAR: Jennifer Rice provided the report. Jennifer said the Women’s Bar is looking for new officers. Jennifer will put an article in the up-coming Messenger.
PRO BONO PROGRAM: Jennifer Rice provided the report. She states things are going well at the time.
LIBRARY: Ian McCargar provided the report. A letter has been prepared by the committee for the County Manager to present to the Board of County Commissioners. This letter seeks Board approval for the library located in the Justice Center to be named in memory of Ralph Coyte. A discussion was held on who should be allowed to use the library. Members of the LCBA Executive Committee felt it was necessary to protect LCBA property and limit on-line use to LCBA members.
NEW BUSINESS: Linda Miller discussed the October 22, 2004 CBA Meeting. The CBA wants to be supportive of the Judiciary. Concerns are the Legislative and Executive Branches of government are eroding the Judiciary’s authority.
OLD BUSINESS: Randy Starr talked about the scholarship program. Scholarships in the amount of $750.00 must be used within 2 years of the award. The recipient does not have to be in law related studies. Goal is to generate money from Professional Committee events. Don’t want membership dues used for funding scholarships.
There will not be a meeting in December. The next meeting is scheduled for January 11, 2005 at the Bluebird Café at 7:05 am.
