Legislature adjourns for 2008

Unless Governor Ritter calls the legislators back for a special session, the finishing touches were put on the on the Second Regular Session of the Sixty-Sixth General Assembly the evening of Tuesday, May 6 – one day short of the scheduled adjournment day of May 7. By ending the session one day early the legislature saved taxpayers an estimated $15,000 but it is a savings that can be measured in more than dollars and cents – it is just like the old saying, "No man's (or woman’s) life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session." - Mark Twain.

In Sum

Overall, for the CBA the year was quite successful. Our sponsored legislation has been approved by both the legislature and the governor. The CBA has a reputation for bringing well thought-out legislation that seeks to improve the legal system - for our members as well as the public.

A big thank you goes out to all the sections for their work in reviewing, amending, fixing, analyzing, killing, and helping pass numerous bills from January through May.

The Legislative Policy Committee (LPC) and in particular the committee chairman, David Lytle, must be commended for their efforts throughout the session; they meet weekly when the legislature is in session to direct our efforts at the legislature. During the “off-session” the LPC meets monthly to reflect on the session just concluded and to prepare for the session that is always around the corner. Finally, our lobbyist, Amy Redfern, does a phenomenal job of representing the CBA at the legislature. Her intellect, experience and professionalism are tremendous assets to our Association.

Well done.
