Meeting Minutes
October 16, 2007

Present:  Diane Balkin, Judy Calhoun, Denise Mikita, Cheryl Law, Sheila Rappaport, Kathleen Schoen, Jan Mickish, Mary Toornman, John Cogley, Norm Renter

I. Introduction
Dr. Aubrey Lavizzo’s, committee member, honorary celebration at the Children’s Museum this Friday, October 19, 2007, 4pm to 5:30pm. Members encouraged to attend.  Invitation was provided. 

II. Current Projects:

a. Vet Reporting Abuse Project - Denise Mikita

i. Established a “Mandatory Reporting…” booklet, plus, a magnet. Plan to market a training video and send to veterinarians around the State. Also, implement trainings in vet tech schools. 

b. D.V. and Shelter Issue Project - Norm Renter & Kath Schoen

i. Meeting on Thursday, September 27, 2007, 12pm – 1:30pm with Ann Beauvais, Shelter Manager, Family Tree; Valerie Robson, Manager, Douglas County Adult and Aging Services, and Linda Babcock, Adult Protection Unit, Denver Dept of Human Services (DDHS).  Doug Kelley, Director, Denver Animal Care & Control, Denver Municipal Animal Shelter & Becky Stern were unable to attend but asked to be involved.  Norm mentioned this is a pilot program to encourage DDFL to respond to victims who have not yet entered the “system” but need an outlet for their pets. Theresa, DDFL’s VP of Operations, will review Norm’s proposal. Next meeting is Thursday, October 25, 2007 at DDFL.

c. Cross-training with EVAW/Prosecutors – Kath Schoen & Diane Balkin

i. Meeting planned to incorporate LINK trainings with EVAW trainings and cross-train other prosecutors. Meeting is Friday, November 16, 2007, 9am at Diane's office/Denver DA. 

III. Lunderfest Bark in the Park - Cheryl Law for Kay Dahlinger:

a. DDL, THE LINK and Am. Humane were represented; 850 visitors within 6 hours; over 57 different breeds of dogs; Kids Kornor taught kids to care for their dog and other dog related projects; encouraged members to attend next event on Sept. 20 & 21, 2008

IV. Upcoming Trainings:

a. Kay Dahlinger - LINK presentation at the APD Academy on Nov. 20th, 2007
b. Diane Balkin - Montrose working out date to do a training.

V. Legislative Update:
Kath Schoen will update committee on any plans to redo protective orders.

VI. Other Business:

a. Suggested speakers for upcoming meetings:

i. Kath and Jan will contact Kemp Center to establish how they approach  prosecution/sentencing/treatment of abuse between children and pets and pursue a possible speaker.
ii. Barb is looking into finding a Hoarding therapist that can share on the differences re: hoarding pets vs. hoarding items.
iii. John Cogley mentioned he could do a possible training sometime in 2008 with regard to teaching empathy to children using his Lundehund pet.

b. Information from Dianne Smith on Shelter Planners of America who attended the AHA Annual Conference in Alexandria, VA in September.  They are partnering with Richard Thompson, former CEO of Meow Mix Company to give away a 1 million dollar shelter makeover project.  The information is located on the ZooToo website and their link is: http://www.zootoo.com.  Bill Meade is the Founder & Director of Shelter Planners of America. c. Information from Diane Balkin about committee member Martha Smith. She has been selected as the winner of the 2007 Human Hero Award.  The celebration will be Saturday, November 17, 2007 at Turnhalle in the historic Tivoli Center at Auraria.
