In September 1996, then president of the Colorado Bar Association, Miles Cortez, convened a task force, charging it with the responsibility of recommending to the Board of Governors how the CBA's "resources and incomparable public spirit can be most productively applied" to stem the epidemic of family violence. After eight months of study, the Task Force presented a proposal to the Board of Governors recommending the creation of a family violence program. The Board of Governors enthusiastically committed to the program in May 1997.

 

Since 1997 the Family Violence Program has worked with organizations and individuals inside and outside the legal profession to curb the tide of family violence.

·         Co-sponsored annual Violence in the Workplace Conference (Third Annual Conference took place May 9, 2002).

·         Developed of A Guide to Workplace Violence Prevention for employers, unions, legal representatives, and family violence advocates. (Third Edition, 2002)

·         Created Domestic Violence: Make It Your Business, a project funded by the Colorado Attorney General. (Launched 2002)

·         Developed the Survivor’s Manual: Legal Issues for Survivor’s of Domestic Violence (2001).

·         Developed a comprehensive Web site.

·         Developed workplace violence policies for law firms.

·         Co-sponsors of annual legislative luncheons and active participant with other Colorado Bar Association committees to garner support and opposition to key family violence legislation.

·         Created a video of an immigration and domestic violence workshop presented at the Family Law Section luncheon.

·         Collaborator and partner with such organizations as:
