The CBA Mock Trial Subcommittee is excited to announce that the 2009 Colorado High School Mock Trial Tournament will be March 13- 14, 2009

in Jeffco at the Jefferson County Courthouse, hosted by the First Judicial District.

Since 1985, the Colorado Bar Association has sponsored the CBA High School Mock Trial Program. More than forty-five states participate in the high school mock trial program. This Colorado educational program is one of the leading and most respected mock trial programs in the country.

Colorado's mock trial program includes more than 100 high school teams, of which 1,500 students perform as attorneys and/or witnesses in a court case. There are seven regional programs, and hundreds of attorneys, judges, teachers, and other community leaders volunteer their time to teach students about the judicial system and the trial process through active participation in a mock trial.

Any Colorado high school is welcome to participate. Students must be enrolled in grades 9-12 at the time of participation in the regional tournament. Each team must have at least one teacher/organizational sponsor and, ideally, one attorney coach. Teams having difficulty finding an attorney coach may contact their local bar association and/or the CBA to assist in recruiting an attorney.

Mock trial teams are composed of six to twelve students who perform a case for both the Prosecution/Plaintiff and the Defense/Respondent. In most cases, an actual Colorado judge or magistrate presides over the trial round, while two or three attorneys score the student performances. In any mock trial round, three students serve as attorneys to argue their side of the case, and three students serve as witnesses for direct- and cross-examinations.

The case problem pertains either to a criminal or civil case. You may access past cases by clicking on Mock Trial Archive Library in the left hand column.
