 8th J.D. – Two vacancies

Judicial district nominating commission members are not eligible for appointment to judicial office in that district while serving on the commission nor for a period of one year thereafter pursuant to the Colorado Constitution, Article VI, Section 24.  Nominating commission members must reside in the judicial district in which there is a vacancy and must continue to do so until the end of their terms.  Commission members are generally appointed for six-year terms.  More information on Colorado’s Merit Selection System, specific commission rosters and rules, and judicial vacancies can be found on the nominating commission portion of the Colorado Judicial Branch web site located at www.courts.state.co.us/supct/committees/supctnomincomm.htm .

2.         9th JD Court Video Conferencing Presentation & 9th JD Bar Association Annual Meeting.  The Courts of the Ninth Judicial District have recently begun using video conferencing technology to conduct hearings before out-of-town judges via the intranet.  (For example, an emergency hearing in Rio Blanco County may be conducted before a judge located at the Garfield County Courthouse using video conferencing.)  The Courts would like to present this information to the local bar associations in order to familiarize attorneys with the new use of this technology.  The presentation for the 9th Judicial District Bar Association members will be held at the Garfield County Courthouse, Room 402, on November 20, 2003 at 12:00 noon.  It is anticipated that the Pitkin County Bar Association will participate in the same presentation from the Pitkin County Courthouse using the video conference technology.

Immediately following the video conferencing presentation, the 9th Judicial District Bar Association will hold its annual meeting.  We will hold the 2004 officer elections and other business will be conducted.  Lunch will be served to attendees of the video conferencing seminar and annual meeting, so please RSVP to Nicole Garrimone at ndg@lklawfirm.com or 945-2261 by November 14th.

3.         9th Judicial District Bar Association Holiday Party.  MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!  The 9th JD Bar Association 2003 Holiday Party will be held at the Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company, 402 7th Street, Glenwood Springs, on December 4, 2003 from 6:00-8:30 p.m.  Food and drinks will be provided and use of the billiard tables is free.  Spouses or significant others are welcome.

4.         Local CWBA Chapter.  The Colorado Women’s Bar Association (CWBA) wants to know if local women attorneys would be interested in forming a local CWBA chapter or an informal group that would participate in CWBA statewide functions.  If you are interested, or if you would like more information, please contact Laura Wassmuth at lwassmuth@kennedy-christopher.com .  We are hopeful that Laura can attend the 9th JD Bar Association annual meeting to present more information about the proposal.

5.         Nominations for 2004 9th JD Bar Association Officers.  We’re still seeking nominations for the 2004 Bar Association Officers.  If you or someone you know would like to contribute to the local Bar Association by becoming an officer, please let us know.  The election of officers will take place at the Bar Association’s annual meeting on November 20th.
