Volunteer Opportunities

 

 

Denver Rescue Mission

What is the Denver Rescue Mission:  The DRM provides permanent and temporary housing for homeless, working families and assist their efforts to become self sufficient The DRM, was founded in 1892, is the oldest full-service charity serving the Rocky Mountain area.

How does the Denver Rescue Mission work:  The DRM has several programs with a similar aim of assisting in rehabilitation of homeless families by providing shelter, food, medical care, chapel services and mentoring.  The programs are:

 

·          Lawrence Street provides shelter, food, medical care, clothing and long term  rehabilitation.

·          New Life Program is a long-term addition recovery program (3-27 months).

·          Champa House is a residential facility offering long-term help toward self-sufficiency to single mothers and their children.

·          Harvest Farm is a rural rehabilitation program.

·          Family Rescue Ministry housing and mentoring for homeless/refugee and working families.

 

Volunteer Opportunities with The Denver Rescue Mission

 

Group/Individual Opportunities:

 

1. Serve meals to homeless at Lawrence Street.

2. Participate in the mentoring program at Champa House and New Life Program (read to participants The Purpose Driven Life by Clark Warren, share life experiences, or just listen).

3. Tutoring at Champa House or at New Life Program. Children at the Champa House can use help with homework.

4. Child Care:  Provide childcare for 1-2 hours for mothers at Champa house.

5. Food/Clothing Drive: Assistance is needed to sort donated items facilitating disbursement to participants of the five programs.

6. Seasonal opportunities:  Hope bags and back to school bag program is in need of volunteers to stuff bags with donated items.

There are no specific restrictions regarding group size and volunteer times are flexible.  Women volunteers are preferable for the Champa House.

Habitat for Humanity

What is Habitat for Humanity:  Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness.  Millard Fuller and his wife Linda founded habitat in 1976.

How does Habitat work:  Habitat for Humanity provides opportunities for volunteers to work along side the future homeowners.  Homes are sold back to low-income families at no profit, with low or no interest loans. Mortgage proceeds are utilized to finance future home projects.  Families are chosen based on need, willingness to participate in the construction process, and ability to repay a low/no interest mortgage.  The average cost of a home is approximately $46,000.

 

Volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity

Group/Individiual Opportunities:

 

1. At the construction site:  Habitat is scheduled to build 30 homes this year beginning in May.  Schedules are posted approximately a month in advance.  Groups can consist of between three and ten volunteers.  No previous construction experience is needed.  Participants must be 16 years of age and be willing to commit a full day to the project (9:00a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).  Construction takes place from Wednesday through Saturday (Saturday volunteer positions are reserved for home sponsors).  Habitat provides tools, safety equipment and instruction as well as a sack lunch and beverage.

 

 2. At the warehouse:  HFH has a warehouse of donated new and used building materials and household items.  Volunteer opportunities at the warehouse include:  sorting donated items, assisting customers, pricing new items, and assisting in cleaning/organizing the warehouse.  Volunteers must be available for a minimum four-hour shift (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.). The warehouse is open Tuesday through Saturday.
