DENVER—Recognizing leadership and service in the legal community and the community at large, Kara Veitch has been named the Colorado Bar Association Young Lawyers Division’s Gary L. McPherson Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year.

Veitch, 37, is assistant director at Colorado Forum, a member organization that advances public policy issues in Colorado. Prior to joining Colorado Forum this year, she was a partner with Isaacson Rosenbaum P.C.

Veitch focuses her community work on serving women and children. She is a founder of the BabiesNow! Foundation, which provides diapers to local nonprofits to be used as incentives for families to participate in programs that benefit babies, such as parenting classes. She also serves on the board of directors for the Women’s Bean Project, which teaches life and job readiness skills to women, and is granting co-chair of Beyond Our Borders, which provides grants to promote the interests of women and children in the developing world.

Within the legal community, Veitch is the president of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, a former president of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association, a member of the Colorado Commission on the Legal Profession and served on the Colorado Bar Association Executive Committee. She was named the 2010 Denver Bar Association Young Lawyer of the Year and was recognized in the Denver Business Journal’s Forty under 40 in March.

“I’m honored to be recognized by my fellow young lawyers,” Veitch said. “I’m committed to making a real impact in our community, and this honor reminds me and my colleagues of the good we can do.”

The Gary L. McPherson Outstanding Lawyer of the Year award is given annually to a young lawyer with an outstanding record of professional success, community service achievements, a strong commitment to civic participation and inspiring others. McPherson was honored with the award in 1993; he went on to serve three terms in the state legislature. The award was renamed in his honor following his death in 2000.

“Kara is a model lawyer,” said CBA YLD Chair Benjamin E. Currier. “She is incredibly involved with advancing the legal profession and improving our community.”

Veitch will be honored at the CBA YLD holiday party on Dec. 14 at Vita, and at the Colorado Bar Foundation Annual Bar Fellows Dinner on Jan. 6 at the Hyatt Regency Denver.

COBALT

COBALT is an interactive leadership training program designed specifically for lawyers with demonstrated leadership skills and commitment to the legal community. Members of the Program Committee, comprising former graduates of the COBALT program, plan each day of programming with the intent to not only teach leadership skills, but also to address challenges faced by leaders in the legal community and the general community, inspire and energize students, and facilitate a group learning experience. The benefit of the training will vary depending on each individual’s level of experience, commitment, participation, and interest in the program. Prior students have described COBALT as being both professionally and personally rewarding, although each person will describe the individual benefits of the program differently.
