CBA YLD News and Upcoming Events

December

Happy Holidays from the Colorado Bar Association Young Lawyer’s Division. We wish you a safe and happy holiday season. With the holidays here, the CBA-YLD is offering programs for you to stay involved in your legal community. As always, with so many upcoming events, we look forward to seeing you soon.

1.) Gary McPherson Award.

Congratulations to Kara Veitch, the 2011 Gary McPherson Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award winner. Every year the CBA-YLD selects a young lawyer as the winner of the Gary McPherson award from a group of talented and committed attorneys, and this year was no different. This year, Kara Veitch was selected because of her outstanding work in the community and her commitment to public service and the law. She exemplifies what the Gary McPherson award stands for and is an example to all young lawyers in Colorado.

2.) Legal Movie CLE

The DBA-YLD and the CBA-YLD are partnering to offer a "legal-movie night" CLE for Colorado attorneys. This event will feature The Lincoln Lawyer presented by Chief Justice Michael Bender. The Chief Justice will speak about various issues related to criminal law, ethics of the law, and representing difficult clients. Following his presentation, the movie will be screened in its entirety. This event is onDecember 8, 2011 at 5pm at the CBA/DBA Bar Association offices located at 1900 Grant Street, Denver, Colorado.  Approved for 2 CLE credits including 1 ethics credit, this will be an event not to miss. Please RSVP to lunches@cobar.org or online at http://www.cobar.org/cle/item.cfm?eventid=DBAYLD120811 by December 7th. The cost of event is $5 and includes CLE credit and food and drinks.

3.) Children’s Charity Drive

Save your children’s items including clothes, strollers, cribs, car seats and any other similar items for our yearly donation drive. Every year the CBA YLD partners with WeeCycle to collect and donate children’s items, toys and other necessities to children and families in need across Colorado. We will be asking for donations and making collections soon. The CBA-YLD will also be hosting a kick-off party to celebrate the collection drive. More details to come…

4.) CBA Open house

Mark your calendars, in 2012, the CBA-YLD is hosting an “Open House” where the various sections of the Colorado Bar Association and the local Bar Associations will be featured and highlighted so that young lawyers can become more familiar with the various benefits that the Colorado Bar Association offers to its members. This event in the past has featured great food and drinks and an opportunity to meet the other sections of the Colorado Bar and network with other Colorado lawyers.

5.)  CBA-YLD Event Recap

October and November were very busy months for the CBA-YLD. Here are some of the exciting events that occurred.

a.)        On October 26, 2011, the CBA YLD and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts partnered for a CLE presentation and a performance of To Kill A Mockingbird. The CLE presentation was extremely engaging and informative. Chief Judge Wiley Daniels and John M. Riley spoke about the new Jim Crow and race issues within the criminal system and society. Following this presentation, Mari Newman, Jeralyn Merritt, and Professor Ann England spoke about representing underdog or unpopular clients such as Timothy McVeigh or Guantanamo Bay prisoner. The entire group then received a special session with the director of the To Kill a Mockingbird production who explained the intricacies of the production and the story. The performance itself was a wonderful and true depiction of the well known and time honored story of struggle and society then and now, capping a great event and the CLE perfectly.

b.)        On November 11, 2011, the CBA and the CBA-YLD began a program called Colorado Veteran’s for Colorado Lawyers aimed to assist Colorado veterans with their legal needs and issues. Over 50 veterans came to the Denver clinic for assistance and received the help they needed or an attorney who will work with them to solve their problems. This is an event that will be held regularly in Denver and expanded across the State of Colorado. We wanted to give a special thank you to all of the event volunteers. This event could not have happened without your help and the gift of your time and expertise. If you are interested in volunteering for future clinics or accepting a pro-bono legal matter, please contact benc@m-s-lawyers.com.

c.)        On November 12, 2011, the CBA-YLD hosted a networking event at the CSU v. San Diego State game. While the weather was downright windy, it was a great opportunity to meet and socialize with other Colorado young lawyers during an action packed football game.

d.)        Finally, on November 17, 2011, the CBA-YLD held our annual YLD CLE at the DU Sturm College of Law which featured young lawyers speaking and teaching to other lawyers young and experienced alike. This was a CLE program tailored to the needs and interests of members of the Young Lawyers Division. The topics covered ranged from environmental legal issues, to litigation strategies, to Indian law, to hanging your own shingle, and being the best (young) lawyer you can. This event is always highly attended, and this year we had over 100 people attend. We are planning to hold another CLE at CU in the Spring, so start thinking about your topics for the upcoming CLE.

6.) We’re always happy to hear from members who want to volunteer for the many CBA/YLD programs and activities.  In fact, the CBA/YLD strongly encourages all young attorneys to become active in the many exciting projects and activities sponsored by the CBA/YLD.  For more information on volunteering, e-mail Ben Currier at benc@m-s-lawyers.com.

7.) Check us out on Facebook and online and keep updated about our events. http://www.facebook.com/CBAYLD

8.) Monthly meetings are set for the second Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm. They are open to anyone who wishes to attend.
