Message from Your Chair

Since becoming Chair of the Colorado Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (CBA YLD) last month, I have been thrilled to see so many emails from young lawyers looking to get involved in the Young Lawyers Division.

I’d first like to welcome two new additions to YLD leadership at the bar association. First, Sumi Lee is our new Coordinating Editor of The Colorado Lawyer Department for the Young Lawyers Division. Second, Ben Johnston of Balcomb & Green, P.C. (Carbondale, Colorado) has agreed to serve as the YLD Liaison to the 9th Judicial District. Ben joins our council member Lance Timbreza (Grand Junction, Colorado) in helping the YLD get its programming and events to the Western Slope. Welcome Sumi and Ben!

In upcoming events, the CBA YLD Executive Council will dedicate its September Executive Council Meeting to getting members involved. Join us to learn about our committees, projects, and plans for the year:
September 2, 2015 (6–7 p.m.)
CBA Offices, 1900 Grant Street, 9th floor
Please RSVP to asreenen@cobar.org.

We look forward to seeing you there! Please see below for other opportunities to get involved.

Nicole Black
2015–16 CBA YLD Chair

Thank you to the Family Law Section Young Lawyers

A warm thank you to the young lawyers of the Family Law Section who attended the young lawyers luncheon at the Family Law Institute on Aug. 8, 2015. CBA YLD Executive Council members Lance Timbreza, Joi Kush, and Danae Woody hosted approximately 25 young lawyers and experienced practitioners for a lunch networking event. Thank you to Justice Hood of the Colorado Supreme Court for joining the group and to the Family Law Section for cosponsoring the lunch. The event was a resounding success!

Volunteer for the DU/CU Transactional Cup with the Business Law Section

The Business Law Section is once again looking for practitioners to volunteer with the CU/DU Transactional Cup Competition. This is the second year the Business Law Section has organized and sponsored the Competition between students at both Colorado law schools. It is a great opportunity to connect with law students who are interested in business law and to get involved with the Section.

This year’s Competition will be Friday, Oct. 16 at CU and DU, and Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Colorado Bar Association Offices. If you are a practitioner interested in helping with the Competition, please contact Nicole Black or Stacey Bowers.

Volunteer with the Bullyproof Project

The CBA YLD is currently looking for volunteers to participate in a Bullyproof outreach program at Heaton Middle School in Pueblo from approximately 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 4. Volunteers will work with and educate these students about the bullying epidemic, and empower them to end bullying at their school. We are looking for approximately three to four young lawyers, who will emcee this program, provide a testimonial about their bullying experiences, lead an interactive and educational game, and/or hand out prizes to students. Scripts are available for the emcee and “game show host” roles. Please contact Casey Kannenberg at ckannenb@fclaw.com if you are interested in volunteering or have questions. For more information about Bullyproof, please visit: americanbar.org/groups/young_lawyers/initiatives/anti_bullying_initiative.
