Max E. Carlson took the “Golden Trees” photograph in Beaver Creek in December 1995, using a Pentax ZXN 35mm film camera, with Fuji Velvia film (50 speed). A tripod was necessary because of the low light at night (shutter speed and aperture specs were not recorded). It had just recently snowed several inches, so softly that it piled neatly on the wooden fence and on every branch of the trees, allowing the holiday lights to filter through. Carlson is the Sedgwick County Judge, a part-time position that he has held for thirty-three years. He also has a private law practice in Julesburg, called Vandemoer & Carlson, P.C., where he has practiced law for thirty-five years.
