Nominations Sought for 2012
Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award

Deadline: October 15, 2012

The YLD welcomes nominations for the 2012 Gary McPherson Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award. Each year, the YLD recognizes a Colorado lawyer for his or her outstanding contributions to the legal profession and the community. Nomination forms are available on the YLD website at www.cobar.org/yld. Deadline for nominations is October 15.

The award’s namesake, Gary McPherson, was a Colorado state representative and an active CBA and YLD member who was killed in a plane crash at age 37. A memorial published by the Colorado House of Representatives stated:

Representative McPherson loved politics and serving this state. . . . He will be remembered as one of the General Assembly’s most highly regarded and popular members. . . . [He] was an honorable, hardworking public servant who was respected by both Republicans and Democrats.

Gary McPherson was named Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year in 1993. After his death in 2000, the award was renamed in his honor.

Nominees should be CBA members in good standing who are 37 years or younger or who have been practicing law fewer than three years. Nominees should have an outstanding record of professional success and community service achievements, have a strong commitment to civic participation, and be an inspiration to others within and outside the legal profession.

Practical Aspects of Practice for Young Lawyers
and Hot Topics in Law

November 16, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
University of Denver Sturm College of Law

Every year, the CBA YLD hosts a "Practical Aspects of Practice" CLE program geared toward the specific needs and interests of YLD members. This year’s program will discuss the following topics: client communication; improving legal writing and getting published; preserving appellate issues that arise before, during, and after trial; appellate basics; mistakes young lawyers make; tips from a clerks panel on "good" and "bad" courtroom practices; and avoiding malpractice in litigation and transactional work. Content-specific presentations on immigration law and campaign finance also will be featured, and there will be special presentations on the Colorado Lawyers Assistant Program (COLAP) profiles in courage.

Law students and lawyers of all experience levels are welcome to attend. Cost, which includes materials and lunch, is $15 for law students, $30 for CBA members, and $45 for nonmembers. CLE credits—6 general and 2 ethics—are being requested.

This day is ripe for networking. To register, e-mail lunches@cobar.org or call (303) 860-1115, ext. 727.
