COLTAF Update: Banks Waive Service Fees

The Colorado Lawyer Trust Account Foundation ("COLTAF") is pleased to announce that the following twelve banks have recently joined the Honor Roll—the ninety-seven Colorado financial institutions that waive service and activity fees and remittance charges on COLTAF accounts:

American Bank
Bank at Broadmoor
Bank One, Colorado
Collegiate Peaks Bank
Colorado State Bank & Trust
Compass Bank
Farmers State Bank-Brush
Farmers State Bank-Fort Morgan
First American State Bank
First National Bank-Lamar
US Bank (all branches)
WestStar Bank (all branches)

The decision by these banks to waive fees is an outstanding gesture of goodwill and community spirit, and the Board of Directors extends its thanks to all the attorneys who contacted their banks on behalf of COLTAF. The additional income to COLTAF from these recently waived fees is more than $45,000 —money that will be used to provide even more civil legal services to Colorado’s low-income individuals, families, seniors, disabled people, and victims of domestic violence.

COLTAF, authorized by the Colorado Supreme Court, receives the interest on pooled client trust accounts where the funds are so nominal in amount, or are expected to be held for such a short period of time, that it is not practical to earn or account for the interest on the individual deposits. A full explanation of a lawyer’s responsibility regarding client funds is found in the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct, Rule 1.15.

COLTAF is pleased to publish an updated Honor Roll, which includes all banks that waive fees on COLTAF accounts. Attorneys are encouraged to use these banks or to talk with their own bank about eliminating fees on COLTAF accounts. If you have questions or comments, please contact the COLTAF office at (303) 863-7221, or visit the COLTAF website: www.coltaf.org.
