CBA High School Mock Trial Program

Congratulations to the Glenwood Springs High School Mock Trial Team—2014 State Champs

  Glenwood Springs wins!

Students from Glenwood Springs High School took first place in the 2014 CBA High School Mock Trial Tournament, defeating a team from Denver’s Colorado Academy in the championship round. The tournament was held on March 14 and 15 at the Jefferson County Combined Courts.

The Glenwood Springs team will advance to the National High School Mock Trial Championship, which will take place on May 8–10 in Madison, Wisconsin. There, they will argue a new case and compete with more than 1,000 students from the United States, U.S. territories, and South Korea.

Most teams participate in mock trial as an extracurricular activity run by teacher and attorney volunteers. This year, 104 teams from around the state competed in the program. The final twenty-four competed in nine regional tournaments held in February.

Students have been preparing for the tournament since September. Their fictitious case dealt with distracted driving involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. The students had to prepare both sides of the case and had to be ready on a moment’s notice to perform either the prosecution or defense side of the case. They were scored by real attorneys and judges.

This year, the CBA Mock Trial Committee partnered with EndDD.org (End Distracted Driving), which is sponsored by the Casey Feldman Foundation, to write a case problem that would compel each participant to make a pledge to end distracted driving. The Colorado Trial Lawyers Association and the Casey Feldman Foundation awarded $500 to both Holy Family High School and Regis Jesuit for best incorporating EndDD.org’s safe-driving message into their mock trial presentation.

Alex Martinez, Denver Public Schools General Counsel and former Colorado Supreme Court Justice, presided over the championship round, along with Hon. Christine Arguello of the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado; Hon. David P. Cain, Colorado Office of Administrative Courts; Hon. Christina Habas, Keating Wagner Polidori Free PC; Emma Pinter, Westminster City Council; Hon. Gale Miller, Colorado Court of Appeals; Hon. Steven Bernard, Colorado Courts of Appeals; and Teri Vasquez, Bayer Carey LLC.

This marks the twenty-ninth year of the CBA High School Mock Trial Program. Sponsored by the CBA Litigation Section and the Colorado Bar Foundation, it is one of the leading and most respected educational programs in the country. Each year, approximately 1,500 high school students perform as attorneys and/or witnesses in a court case. In addition, hundreds of attorneys, judges, teachers, and other community leaders volunteer their time to this program, which teaches students about the judicial system and the trial process.

Who are the members of the 2014 Colorado championship team?

My name is Francesca Chavez.

I am a junior at Glenwood Springs High School and this is my third year in Mock Trial. In addition to Mock Trial, I enjoy traveling and reading.

My name is Cassidy Creer.

I’ve been doing Mock Trial for three years. I am 16 and a junior at Glenwood Springs High School. When I’m not at Mock Trial, I volunteer at CARE and enjoy sports.

My name is Valarie Flores.

I am a junior at Glenwood Springs High School. I have been doing Mock Trial for three years, cheerleading for two years, and track for three years. I am a peer counselor at GSHS and have been playing the flute for six years. I love watching Broadway shows and traveling to new places.

My name is Rorey Freeman.

I’m 17. I’m a junior at Glenwood Springs High School and I’m a Link Leader at my school. I’m a black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do. I just got an Outstanding Witness Award at Regionals. I like snowboarding and acting.

My name is Olivia Hayes.

I am a senior and this is my fourth year of Mock Trial. I have competed at state all four years and at the Empire Cup for three years. When I’m not doing Mock Trial (which isn’t very often), I play soccer and perform in the school plays. I haven’t decided on a college yet, but it will probably be the University of Oklahoma or DU. I got outstanding witness and attorney awards at Regionals.

My name is Ben Neiley.

I am a junior, in my third year of Mock Trial. I won my fourth Outstanding Attorney Award at this year’s state competition. In addition to Mock Trial, I participate in DECA and I run on the cross-country team and the track team. I am the senior representative for our Key Club, I play the piano and the clarinet, and I am an avid admirer and curator of fashion.

My name is Andrew Schied.

I’m a senior this year at Glenwood Springs High School and have been in Mock Trial for four years. When I’m not in Mock Trial, which is pretty rare, I love playing the piano and being outdoors. I’m the secretary of the Glenwood Springs High School Key Club and an avid fan of dairy, which works out nicely since Nationals is in Wisconsin.

My name is Kira Willis.

I’m a junior at Glenwood Springs High School. Other than Mock Trial, I’m on the tennis team and I’m the president of the school’s Impact Club. I like to write and act.

Thank you for your tremendous support!
