Guide to Judicial Nominating Commissions and Judicial Selection Process

Dear Member of the Family Law Section:

The Executive Council of the CBA Family Law Section believes that the practice of family law in Colorado would be enhanced by increasing the participation of family law attorneys in the judicial nominating process and the appointment of additional family law attorneys to the district court bench.

To promote these goals, the CBA Family Law Section is providing all Section members with materials to educate and promote the appointment of family law attorneys to the Judicial Nominating Commissions and to the district court bench. These materials include the following:

  1. Statutes and Fact Sheet regarding the Judicial Nominating Commissions and Judicial Selection Process for district court judges
  2. Composition of the 22 Colorado Judicial District Nominating Commissions, including their present members and appointment terms
  3. Rules of Procedure for the 22 Judicial District Nominating Commissions
  4. Applications for Nominating Commissions and the District Court bench
  5. Information and insight from a past Nominating Commission member
  6. The interview process as told by a past district court bench applicant

The Executive Council of the Family Law Section encourages all family law attorneys to review this information and consider participating in the judicial nominating and selection process. Regardless of whether your personal ambition is to become a district court judge, there are many ways to participate in the judicial selection process. These ways might include helping other attorneys interested in applying to the Nominating Commission and providing support for applicants by letters or telephone calls.

As previously stated above, the Council believes that an increased presence of family law practitioners on the nominating commissions and bench will promote increased awareness of the important issues presented in domestic relations cases.

Thank you very much for your consideration of these materials.
