The ESPN ticker buzzes by with breaking news that a team and player “have
agreed to terms on a 5 year, $50 million contract extension.”   How did that
happen?  What approach did each side take to arrive a that number?  How is
that contract actually valued by each side, and why is there typically a
difference in valuation?  What at-the-table and away-from-the-table moves
did each side use or experience as part of the deal set up?
 
This luncheon session will walk through actual contract negotiations for
high profile professional athletes conducted by Paul Sheehy, president and
general counsel at ProStar Sports Agency.  Paul has been certified by the
NFL Players Association since 1988, and has negotiated hundreds of NFL
player and NFL and NCAA coaching contracts throughout his career.  He has
also taught negotiating, dispute resolution, and sports law at the graduate
school level at the University of Denver's Daniels College of Business.  He
has been a member of the Colorado Bar since 1997 and was admitted to the
California Bar in 1990.  Paul holds a B.S., MBA, and JD, and has also
participated in the renowned Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation.
