Divorcing families frequently present with allegations of domestic violence. Domestic violence differs greatly across families in terms of severity, type, pattern, frequency, the presence of coercive-control dynamics, and other dimensions. These dimensions greatly affect the level and stakes of risk for additional violence/control, and evaluation is best handled with a systematic approach. Based on the current professional literature, this presentation will describe the different types of DV, discuss the impact of these on children and on co-parenting, and describe a model for assessment of future risk using research based factors. A model for assessment of credibility of allegations will also be presented.
