During this CLE, Alexi Freeman will share best practices for engaging with clients (and colleagues) from different identities and with different frames of reference and cultural norms. This session will elevate strategies and tactics used by clinicians across the country, including but not limited to Sue Bryant and Jean Koh's widely taught Five Habits for Cross Cultural Lawyering and some tenets of critical race theory. Freeman will also offer tools for introspection, ensuring we understand our own backgrounds to determine our gaps, our areas for growth and our strengths, as well as how we have been trained and acculturated to see the world.

Alexi Freeman serves as Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Director of Externships and Social Justice Initiatives; and Professor of the Practice at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Within these roles, she leads our nationally recognized externship program, teaches social change lawyering courses, and oversees a range of efforts dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion. Freeman has received numerous awards while at Denver Law, including the prestigious Robert B. Yegge Excellence in Teaching Award at Denver Law in 2019, after teaching for only 6 years; the University Faculty Career Champion for All Graduate Students, and Outstanding Mentor, Administrator and Faculty member multiple times from the Student Bar Association. Prior to joining Denver Law, Freeman worked as an attorney at Advancement Project, where she assisted grassroots organizations across the country on social justice advocacy campaigns around education and juvenile justice policy, housing, and voting rights. Freeman received a JD from Harvard Law School, where she was recognized for her leadership on campus and public service commitment, and a B.A. in Journalism and Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
