CLE Description:
Service members discharged with a less than Honorable distinction face many challenges in the civilian world. Veterans discharged with Other than Honorable, Bad Conduct, or Dishonorable characterizations are frequently barred by the Department of Veterans Affairs from obtaining compensation or medical care for service related conditions. This course will discuss the options available for veterans to upgrade their discharge status through the Department of Defense via a Discharge Upgrade, including the various Boards, and the arguments that may be made on their behalf.

Speakers:
Brad Cummings is a founder, Executive Director, and Chairman of the Board for the Rocky Mountain Veterans Advocacy Project (RMVAP). Prior to founding the RMVAP, Brad served as a Clinical Fellow with the Veterans Advocacy Project at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law, and continues as an adjunct professor for the Military and Veterans Law Practicum. While attending law school, he earned his J.D. and an LLM in International Business Transactions, as well as dual master's degrees in Resource Law Studies and Environmental Law and Policy. Brad is also a military veteran, having spent 13 years in the United States Air Force, most recently as a Special Agent with the Office of Special Investigations (OSI). Brad earned a B.A. in Philosophy from American Military University in 2010, between deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Having filed multiple claims on his own behalf before the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as for other veterans, he is intimately familiar with the claims process.

Natalie Sanders is a founder, Director of Operations, and Board member for the Rocky Mountain Veterans Advocacy Project (RMVAP). Prior to founding the RMVAP, Natalie served as a Student Attorney with the Veterans Advocacy Project at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law. Before entering the legal field, Natalie studied physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology until she was drawn west by the Rocky Mountains. While she continued to study physics at the University of Colorado, Denver, Natalie also developed a deep passion for philosophy, shifting her focus from theories of the universe to theories of knowledge, both scientific and moral. Eager to put her diverse skillset to work helping others, Natalie worked administrative and IT support roles at law firms until she realized a full time career in advocacy was where she could do the most good.
