Criminal Defense of Military Servicemembers
 
Presented by the Military and Veteran Affairs Section.
 
Join us to discuss the complexities of the state court criminal defense servicemembers and the overlap with military law. This CLE will be in person only at the El Paso County Public Defender's Office.
 
Ryan Coward is a criminal defense and military law attorney at Aviso Law LLC, a firm that he co-founded in 2015. In this capacity he represents clients facing complex federal criminal charges and also specializes in the representation of service members facing prosecution in courts-martial as well as state and federal courts. He is the former Chair of the Colorado Bar Association's Military and Veteran's Law section, and he is a graduate of the Bar Association's leadership training and development program (COBALT). For several years Mr. Coward has been recognized as one of Denver's top lawyers by 5280 magazine and by Super Lawyers, and he is also recognized by Colorado Springs Magazine as one of Colorado's Springs best military law attorneys. Mr. Coward also works as a faculty member at the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, and his firm, Aviso Law LLC, was named the 2018 Colorado Springs veteran-owned business of the year.
 
Mr. Coward is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army JAG Corps Reserves where he is currently assigned as the Chief of Military Justice with the 377th Theatre Sustainment Command out of New Orleans, LA. Over his military career Mr. Coward has served in numerous notable roles, to include serving as capital defense counsel representing Major Nidal Hasan from the Fort Hood shooting and as post-trial defense counsel for Staff Sergeant Robert Bales who was accused of murdering 16 individuals in Afghanistan.
