Porgram Description
With the recent Trump case in Florida, special masters have increased their visibility both in the media and in the courts. In this program, three Colorado special masters will discuss what special masters do. When are special masters appointed and why? How are special masters appointed? What makes a good special master? The program will conclude with a discussion about pathways to becoming a special master for those who might be interested in the profession.
Speaker Bios
David Tenner is special counsel at the Denver law firm of Ridley, McGreevy & Winocur, P.C., where he is an arbitrator, a mediator, a court-appointed special master. Since 2009, he has been included in the Colorado Super Lawyer’s list in the areas of business litigation and alternative dispute resolution and in 2016 was named one of Colorado’s top 100 lawyers. He has been selected to Best Lawyers in America since 2017, in the areas of arbitration and commercial litigation. He is a member of the commercial, employment and large complex case arbitration panels of the American Arbitration Association and was named by Law Week Colorado as Colorado’s Best Arbitrator in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.
Mr. Tenner has been serving as a court-appointed special master since 2008 and has been appointed in over 45 cases in both state and federal courts. In 2011, he was named a Fellow of the Academy of Court Appointed Neutrals (formerly the Academy of Court Appointed Masters) and currently serves as ACAN’s President
J. Gregory “Greg” Whitehair has been a Colorado mediator since 2010, serving as the ADR Section chair in 2013-14; and a court-appointed neutral (special master) focused on IP and high-tech disputes since 2014. He has been a lead trial lawyer in Denver and DC and is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney (Civil). He has served for many years on Colorado’s Civil Rules Committee, specializing in Rule 53, Rule 30(b)(6), and FED protocols, and is a part-time clinical professor in medical ethics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center.
Greg was recently invited to join the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, where he now serves as an Assistant Attorney General in the Cross-Unit Litigation Team (yes, CULT).
Marianne Lizza-Irwin is a licensed attorney in Colorado, and maintains a practice as mediator, arbitrator, special master through Foothills Mediation and ADR. She has litigated and mediated cases as counsel in a wide variety of commercial, complex business disputes, injury, wrongful death, construction, employment, family, insurance, property, estates, and HOA areas for almost 35 years. She now specializes resolution of disputes in these areas throughout Colorado, having mediated over 500 cases. She also provides mediation and arbitration services, acts a facilitator in employment and business matters, provides special master services in cases, including complex litigation, and provides education on mediation and other ADR options in classrooms, specialty meetings and conferences, including Regis University, CBA-CLE, Denver Federal Center-Executive Board, and DORA-HOA. She is a past Chair and member of the ADR Section of the Colorado Bar Association, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), American Association of Attorney Mediators and is honored to have been including in the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals. She is also of counsel to Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP.
