A Primer on the Jury System and Jury Selection

 

This Chat will be a great opportunity to receive valuable information regarding our jury system and the jury selection process in Denver District and County Courts, including from two Denver judges, while learning about the establishment of Jury Appreciation Day in Colorado, which will occur for the first time on September 5. The presentation will kick off with a presentation from Brad Ross-Shannon, who is a Past President of the Colorado chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), who will discuss the jury system and ABOTA’s efforts that convinced the Colorado General Assembly to establish Jury Appreciation Day. Then, Denver District Court Judge Shelley Gilman and County Court Judge Olympia Fay will discuss emerging issues in jury selection (including potential changes with respect to preemptory challenges and Batson determinations), and provide some dos and don’ts of effective jury selection. This presentation, like all of the Courtroom Chats, will occur in a casual “roundtable” format in which attendees are encouraged to ask questions and participate in a dialogue with the presenters.
