Introduction to Denver District Court’s Newest Judge, Hon. Jon J. Olafson

Judge Olafson will lead a presentation on the identification of meaningful personal identity characteristics, the role bias (cultural, conscious, and unconscious) plays in a courtroom and legal practice, the mandates of our professional rules of responsibility regarding bias, and practical tools legal professionals can use to de-bias their practice, create environments of respect, and understand the necessary factors for a respect and bias-free environment. Judge Olafson’s presentation will track the following learning objectives:

1. Identify the sledgehammers (personal identity characteristics) and mosquito bites (bias-driven actions) that impact every legal environment.

2. Definitional level-set on the different types of biases that impact a legal practice, including unconscious, conscious, and cultural bias.

3. Understand the empirical impacts of bias in legal proceedings.

3. Equip participants with the necessary professional rules that form the basis of this work.

4. Equip participants with tools to recognize and combat bias.

5. A review of Judge Olafson’s standing order on de-biasing the courtroom and courtroom inclusivity.
